The Network Status page is one of the most visited pages from the homepage on the Optus website but does not follow UX best practice.
THE APPROACH
How I fixed it
Hypothesis
I hypothesised that customers who visited the Network Status page were usually already frustrated when checking their network as it often meant a poor service or service disruption. As a result I wanted to ensure that the page looked clean and simple and they had a seamlesss experience when viewing the status of their network.
Measures of Success
My aim was to optimise the page to improve the customer experience and increase the conversion rate.
STEP 1
UX Review
The first steps were to meet with the stakeholders to discuss requirements and then review the wireframes provided by the UX designer to discuss any changes to business requirements and suggest any improvements.
STEP 2
Ideation
Next I created a prototype for mobile and desktop and presented this to the stakeholders for review.
During the second phase of the project I designed screens for the second scenario.
STEP 3
Feedback & Approval
With such a quick turnaround time there was no opportunity to get feedback at Peer Review (our internal feedback session) and so after making the initial changes the stakeholders approved the second design version and it was commissioned to be developed.
THE SOLUTION
What I did
Designed a desktop version
Updated the UI
Made UX recommendations such as other ways forward
THE CHALLENGES
What I learned
After the project I reflected on the following insights:
I was only provided with wireframes for mobile and while I agreed to complete the UI in a specific timeframe it should have occurred to me that I would be required to create desktop wireframes too which did take some time.
The stakeholders on this project were very enjoyable to work with and seemed to accept the proposed design quite easily so there were minimal challenges.
I’d say not having contact with the third party company who were going to be responsible for developing components of the design was difficult as I usually work quite closely with developers and can ask questions as I go along.
Whilst I agreed with most of the wireframes I did modify the design slightly which the stakeholders approved.
